If you stop to ask locals for directions, Makena Beach is known widely as Big Beach because it is one the longest stretch of beach than all the other beaches on Maui. There is plenty of space to bask-and-bathe with almost a mile of endless white sand. The location also offers panoramic views of sister islands Molokini and Kahoolawe. Although Big Beach is protected from the trade winds due to the lava outcroppings at each end, the waves can be quite big, rough and dangerous. There are two parking lots for Big Beach but they fill-up quickly so don’t hesitate to park on the street, just make sure you are not blocking any entrances, fire hydrants or other cars. Lifeguard on duty.
