Is Maui A Golfing Destination?
Absolutely! With great weather and stunning views, Maui is the perfect setting for a round of golf—several golf courses in Maui range in various skills and course designs. Many visitors come to Maui specifically for the ultimate golf getaway! Let’s explore more about the best golf packages in Maui.
When Is Golfing Season in Maui?
Thanks to the gorgeous weather in Maui, you can golf year-round here! The general consensus, though, is that the best time to golf in Maui is from April to October. The weather is especially pleasant, and you won’t run into the perils of the rainy season during these months. Some parts of Maui have microclimates, meaning they differ slightly from the climate on the main island, so you’ll always want to check ahead for weather conditions before you head out, of course.
Kaanapali Golf Courses
Kaanapali is the perfect course for beginners looking to get in some swings here in Maui! After all, in Maui, we believe that golf is for everyone. There are two courses at Kaanapali, Royal Kaanapali and Kaanapali Kai. For true beginners, the Kaanapali Kai is your course!
Arthur Jack Snyder designed the course in 1976. At 6,400 yards and a par 70, it’s more forgiving than its counterpart! The greens have subtle, undulating patterns that make it easier for beginners to navigate. Plus, the course is lined with beautiful native Hawaiian flowers along its trails, like hibiscus, bougainvillea, and plumeria. Enjoy the incredible views over the Pacific as you tee off.
Those looking to play the Royal Kaanapali Course are in for a real challenge. The 6,700-yard, par 71 course is absolutely breathtaking, with ocean views and wildflowers abounding; the tropical winds will keep you cool throughout the game as well. Don’t just take our word for it: Arnold Palmer himself said the 18th hole of this course was one of the best and most challenging holes he ever played. Visit the course to see why!
The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course
The Dunes at Maui Lani Golf Course has a classic old-school feel. It’s also the only golf course in Hawaii built on naturally occurring dune terrain! In a move away from standard modern American golf course architecture, minimal earth-moving occurred when this course was built.
Robin Nelson, the architect of the course, used the land that was already there as inspiration for the course’s design. Playing on The Dunes is like witnessing the marriage of old-school golf design (using naturally occurring land) with modern technologies. It’s the best of both worlds!
The Dunes is a great course for travelers as they offer Titleist club rentals for only $55. This is a great option if you’re not traveling with clubs! You can also practice in the driving range before taking the course. Overall, it’s a relatively challenging course meant for skilled golfers—if you’re a beginner, you may want to choose another spot!
Wailea Gold Golf Course
Looking for a course with a challenging layout that’s sure to sharpen your skills? The Wailea Gold Golf Course is the perfect place for you, then! This famous course in Maui has hosted many prestigious tournaments (like the Wendy’s Champions Skins Game), but it’s also perfect for a casual game!
Robert Trent Jones II designed the course, and it’s widely known for its gorgeous views, rugged terrain, and lava rock formations throughout. Did you ever think you’d be able to play on a golf course that incorporates lava rock walls throughout? Now’s your chance! These rock formations make for a super unique golf game here in Maui.
There are practice facilities onsite, too, if you need to warm up your game before heading out. Use the putting greens, chipping zones, or driving ranges to make sure you’re ready before you take on the course!
After the game, you can unwind at one of the on-site restaurants! There’s a pizzeria if you’re in the mood for Mediterranean cuisine or a more classic Hawaiian choice in “Gather in Maui.” This course is also great because it’s conveniently close to several of our Kihei rentals, like Maui Kamaole H207!
P.S.: If you’re looking for an easier game or have some beginners tagging along, consider checking out Wailea’s Blue Course. You may find it more suitable!
Kapalua Golf
These two courses should definitely be on your Maui must-play list! Whether you tee off on the Plantation Course at Kapalua or The Bay Golf Course at Kapalua, you’re in for a great time!
These two courses on Maui's northwest shore are renowned golf destinations known for their challenging layout and breathtaking ocean views. The dramatic elevation changes and wide fairways cater to both professionals and amateurs. The Plantation Course hosts the PGA TOUR's Sentry Tournament of Champions each January, attracting top golfers from around the world.
No matter which course you choose at Kapalua, your day will be filled with challenges and fun. A perfect day of golf in Maui, if you ask us! Don’t forget to check out their dining options once you’ve finished for the day, as well.
