Feeling inspired to book your trip? Let’s dive into it. Here are some factors to consider when choosing the best time to visit Maui!
What is the Weather Like in Maui?
Maui's weather stays temperate year-round. Average temperatures vary between 75-85°F in summer and winter, and fall/spring temperatures fall somewhere in the middle of that ten-degree range! Most activities here take place year-round unless they have a seasonal element, like whale-watching, or take place during a specific holiday.
Does Maui Have a Rainy Season?
Yes, Maui does have a rainy season that typically lasts from November to March. Trade winds carry cool, moist air from the North Pacific, which causes rainfall in the region during these few months.
While that sounds like it would put a damper on your vacation, rainfall during this rainy season doesn’t usually cause too much of an issue for tourists. Most showers are relatively short, and once they’re over, you can witness a beautiful Hawaiian rainbow! That’s a gift to see on vacation if you ask us.
When is Whale Season in Maui?
Whale watching is one of the most popular activities in Maui, so if that sounds exciting, you should book your trip during whale-watching season. There’s a large window of time to see these majestic creatures, as they typically migrate to warm Hawaiian waters in late fall and start their journey back up north in early spring.
Are There Any Specific Annual Events or Festivals in Maui?
There certainly are! Maui has several annual events that celebrate local culture, people, food, and art every year. If any of these catch your eye, you should check them out during your trip! Maui in Spring
If you can visit Maui in the spring, we highly recommend it. In fact, we wrote an entire blog piece featuring 7 Reasons to Visit Maui in May that’s a helpful read for hopeful spring travelers. Spring and fall are great times to visit because activities and accommodations are often cheaper than during the summer and winter peak months.
Take advantage of these top activities in Maui while there are less crowds!
Top Spring Activities in Maui:
Visiting the beach
Maui beaches are much less crowded now than in the summer and winter!
Whale Watching
While peak season is from December to March, you’ll still see a few humpback whales out as late as May!
Snorkeling
The less crowded waters make May an ideal time to go snorkeling.
Take a Scenic Drive
Iconic spots like the Road to Hana will be much less crowded in spring/fall.
Maui in Summer
Summer is one of the most popular times to visit Maui. School is out, families have time to travel, and the weather is as warm as it gets on the island. Most of the activities you’d explore during the summertime can also take place in spring or fall, so if you have the flexibility to travel then, we recommend taking your trip in May or September as opposed to June-August. It’s simply less crowded!
Maui in Fall
Similar to spring, prices are a bit lower in the fall, and there are still plenty of outstanding activities to partake in during your time in Maui! Rainy season starts around mid-November, so if you’re not a fan of the rain, you may want to time your trip for September or October. Traveling to Maui before the holiday travel frenzy starts will save you time and allow you to get around with fewer tourists!
Maui in Winter
Winter is peak tourist season in Maui. There’s a reason why it’s so popular; if you’re willing to fight through some crowds, it’s a fantastic time to visit! November through March is not only the best time for whale watching but also the prime time to surf in Maui.
Visiting in winter is also ideal if you want to get out and do some hiking. The increased rainfall from Maui’s rainy season helps replenish the waterfalls on the Road to Hana, so those looking to embark on waterfall hikes will appreciate the added precipitation.
