Local's Guide

Planning a trip to Maui sometime soon? You’re in luck, this gorgeous vacation destination has much to offer any visitor. One of our favorite vacation activities here is heading out on a journey to one of Maui’s incredible waterfalls.

Whether you’re an avid outdoorsperson or are looking for something new and different this trip, Maui’s waterfalls are a can’t-miss sight on the island. Come along with us on our helpful guide to discovering the best waterfalls Maui has to offer!

Twin Falls

Twin Falls is one of the top waterfalls to visit in Maui, and it’s a common first stop on the famed Road to Hana for many visitors! Many popular guidebooks will glaze over these falls, but we’re here to convince you that they’re most definitely worth your time on your Maui vacation. The waterfalls are named after the two similar-sized falls that come down on either side of a basalt pillar. If you’re up for a hike, this is the spot for you! It’s one of our favorite Maui hikes & waterfalls.

A secret tip from the locals when embarking on this trail—when you think you’ve found the falls and seen all there is to see, you’re just at the beginning! Keep walking along the meandering trails, and you’ll discover even more of the lush beauty Maui has to offer. If exploring off the main trail a bit makes you nervous, keep in mind these ground rules: “out” is downhill, and following the stream downstream will take you back to where you need to go.

Locals and visitors alike will also encourage you to stop in at the snack stand at Twin Falls. It’s right by the parking lot, and worth the stop! Try some of the tasty, fresh, home-grown fruits, smoothies, cane juice, and home-baked goods at this stand and get a taste of local Maui!

Hanawi Falls

One of the most spectacular spots on the road to Hana (and that’s saying something!) is none other than Hanawi Falls. This Maui waterfall is located a few miles down the road from 3 Bears, at mile marker 24. It’s quite an epic sight—water at the lower falls cascades down from heights of over 200 feet, with beautiful Hawaiian rainforest surrounding on all sides.

Hanawai Falls is one of the most photographed waterfalls in Maui, so make sure you don’t forget your camera! One of our favorite places to view the falls is right off Hanawi Stream’s bridge. Hanawi Stream is a spring-fed river that sustains Hanawi Falls, and this bridge dates back to 1926, giving you a sense of traveling back in time as you delve into the forest. There are many pull-offs in and around the bridge where you can really take in the beauty of the falls. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can trek down to the pool at the base of the falls and take a swim—it’s a bit cold, but totally worth the adrenaline rush!

Upper Waikani Falls/3 Bears Maui

Located along the scenic Hana Highway (just past mile marker 19), Upper Waikani Falls, also known as 3 Bears Falls, is another incredible waterfall in Maui. The falls are on the mauka, or mountain, side of Hana Highway, and offer a perfect place for visitors to stop and take a photo of a breathtaking waterfall. You can trek along a hiking trail or view the beauty of these falls from your car; it’s up to you!

If you’re familiar with the children’s story “Goldilocks and the Three Bears”, you’ll understand why this waterfall was named. The falls are referred to as 3 bears because of the three waterfalls that run parallel to each other: Papa Bear (the largest waterfall on the left), Mama Bear (the middle waterfall), and Baby Bear (the smallest waterfall on the right).

The three falls are visible from the road, so many people choose to take in the sights from the comfort of their vehicles. If you’re up for an adventure though, you’ll feel the refreshing spray of the falls as soon as you step out of the car. At the base of the falls you’ll find several boulders where you can stash your stuff and head out on a nice swim. Don’t forget to take pictures of these stunning waterfalls while you’re here!
