Vacation Planning

Maui, with its stunning landscapes, rich culture, and endless activities, is the ideal destination for a summer getaway. Whether you're looking for relaxation on beautiful beaches, exciting adventures, or cultural experiences, Maui has it all.

Here’s our guide to planning the perfect summer getaway to Maui!

Dining in Maui

When you head out on vacation, you of course need to know the top spots to grab a bite to eat. Maui has a wide range of cuisine options, from local farmers markets to top-scale restaurants. Here are just a few local favorites to check out!

Café O Lei

The perfect option for those traveling in big groups who can’t seem to decide what kind of food they’re in the mood for! Café O Lei has a little bit of everything.

Whether you’re looking for a Hawaiian classic like sushi or want a simple salad, Café O Lei has options. Make a reservation ahead of time or head here early, though, as they get busy!

Mama’s Fish House

Looking for top-notch, authentic Hawaiian seafood? Mama’s Fish is the place for you! It also makes for a fantastic date spot. In fact, it was voted one of the most romantic restaurants in America!

Their menu changes daily based on the local catch, but their mouthwatering options never disappoint. Plus, you can enjoy a beautiful sunset while you enjoy your meal.

Kihei Cafe

Don’t sleep in too late if you’re planning to come here for breakfast, or you’ll be in for a long line! This café is super popular, especially during the summertime.

Why is it so popular, you ask? Well, the food is just that amazing! The portions are also huge here. Enjoy delicious meals like the usual eggs and bacon, cinnamon rolls, loco moco, and more.

Summer Festivals

Maui has some of the best summer festivals around! Let’s explore some of our favorites:

Maui Film Festival

Held Annually in August/September

August 29th – September 2nd 2024

Enjoy a night under the stars watching the best original cinema Maui has to offer! The Maui Film Festival is back for its 24th year in 2024, and it’s become a favorite summertime tradition for many Maui locals.

They dig deep to find hidden gems in the community and showcase them to a larger audience. You never know what up-and-coming filmmaker you could discover here!

Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar Festival

Annually in June

Slack key guitar, known as Kī hōalu in Hawaiian, is a traditional form of guitar playing that originated with Hawaiian cowboys, or paniolo. After long days of ranch work, these cowboys developed their own unique style of playing, which combines open tunings with a specific fingerpicking technique unique to Hawaii. Celebrated as one of the world’s finest acoustic guitar styles, Kī hōalu continues to thrive to this day.

Both locals and tourists come together to enjoy this traditional music at the Slack Key Guitar Festival, returning in 2025 for its 34th year. Experience over a dozen masters of the craft as they perform this unique style of music, all for free!

Best Beaches in Maui

When you picture the ultimate summer vacation, we’d guess a lot of that involves the beach. Sandy shores, beautiful ocean views, water sports…it just doesn’t get any better than that!

Swimming, snorkeling, diving, there’s so many amazing activities to partake in at the beach! You may be wondering what beaches you should visit on your summer trip to Maui. We’ve gathered a list of our favorites here!

Keawakapu Beach

This stunning beach is a bit more remote than some of the others on Maui’s main streets. Parking is limited and you may have to walk a bit to get here, so pack a light bag! The trek to the beach is more than worth it, though. This is the perfect spot for relaxation, and you’ll see many locals here walking along the beach or doing yoga. For a true local’s experience, this is the best beach in Maui.

Oneuli - Black Sand Beach (MAKENA)

Have you ever wanted to visit a black sand beach? Now’s your chance!

This beach is not necessarily the best for swimming, but it does have great snorkeling and diving! Even if you just go to admire the black sand, it’s a must-see. You don’t get to see a black sand beach every day, and it’s quite stunning!

Makena Beach State Park (MAKENA)

One of the most popular beaches in Maui to visit is Makena Beach State Park. It’s known widely to locals as Big Beach, so if you hear someone referring to it that way, now you’ll know what they mean!

There’s almost a full mile of beautiful white sand beach to lay out and bask on here, and absolutely stunning panoramic views of sister islands Molokini and Kahoolawe. Big Beach is a popular spot for bodysurfing and boogie boarding, so get ready for a day of fun!
